The weather last Saturday could not have been more perfect for our Pohela Boishakh celebrations and ushering in a prosperous 1419. BAGA BOD was extremely thankful and happy to see such a huge turnout from the Bangladeshi community to celebrate this joyous festival and promote our culture and heritage to the greater Austin community. The colorful venue, the dazzling performances and the mouth watering delicacies entertained not only our community but also the large number of non-Bangladeshi crowd that poured in throughout the day. Such a big event cannot be successful without an active and engaged community. BAGA BOD is proud and honored to serve this great community whose volunteerism make our lives easy and rewarding in organizing this event.

BAGA BOD would like to thank our sponsors who make it possible for us to organize an event of this proportion. We would like to thank Pragma Systems, H-E-B, City of Austin, CAS Consulting, Dulal Brothers and Texas Gas Service for their continued support for our community. We would also like to congratulate the award winners: Quamrul Mina, Channy Soeur, Raindrop Turkish House and City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department and acknowledge their support and contribution towards our community.

Special thanks and congratulations goes to all the performers for their dazzling performances. Please join us in thanking the cultural leads who spent countless hours in choreographing and preparing the children for their performances. The venue decoration was very colorful and earned rave reviews from the audience and is evident in the colorful pictures. BAGA BOD would like to express our gratitude to all the following volunteers who helped make this year's Pohela Boishakh successful.

PostHeaderIcon BAGA Announces 2012 Community Partnership Award Recipient: Raindrop Turkish House

Bangladesh Association of Greater Austin (BAGA) is proud to announce Raindrop Turkish House as the recipient of this year's Community Partnership Award for it's contribution to BAGA and other charitable, social and cultural contribution to the society.

Raindrop Turkish House is a non-profit, educational, charitable, social and cultural organization founded by Turkish-Americans in Houston in 2000 and now it operates in eight states: Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, New Mexico, Tennessee and Louisiana.

One of the main events that Raindrop Turkish House organizes is the annual Turkish Language and Culture Olympiad. Turkish is one of the critical languages under the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI). NSLI is an interagency initiative of the Departments of State, Education, and Defense, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The initiative is designed to dramatically increase the number of Americans learning critical need foreign languages such as Turkish, Chinese, Persian and others through new and expanded programs from kindergarten throughout university and into the workforce.

PostHeaderIcon BAGA Announces 2012 Business Leadership Award Recipient: Mr.Quamrul Mina

Bangladesh Association of Greater Austin (BAGA) is proud to announce Quamrul Mina as the recipient of this year's Business Leadership Award for his consistent contribution to BAGA events and Bangladeshi community in Austin.

Mr.Mina is living in Austin since 1990 with his wife Farah Naz Zia, and three lovely daughters and is involved with BAGA from its birth. In Bangladesh, he stood first in SSC/10th grade final (1977 Dhaka Board) and second in HSC/12th grade final (1979 Dhaka Board) both from Residential Model School/College.

He is the CEO and co-founder of two successful Austin companies Pragma Systems and BDeshTV and is an accomplished software architect and developer, and has wide experience in the industry in networking and security software. Prior to starting Pragma, he worked at Bell Labs, Touch Communications, Novell and IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California and managed large development teams. He has participated in the development of some of the most widely used software in the world like Novell Netware, TCP/IP, Appletalk, IBM NetView, Tivoli TME for NT, HP OpenView and SecureShell. Quamrul has been involved with the conceptualization and development of most of Pragma's present generation of products, including TelnetServer and Fortress SSH Server. He is a Wien Scholar and has a B.A. in Computer Science from Brandeis University (Magna Cum Laude) and a M.S. in Computer Science from Rutgers University. An avid IT enthusiast, he is a member of the Austin Technology Council and a charter member of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) Austin chapter.

Please join us in congratulating Mr.Mina for his outstanding achievement and contribution to BAGA. BAGA will present the award to Quamrul Mina in it's annual celebration of "Bengali New Year Celebration 2012" on Saturday April 21st at Fiesta Garden.

 

PostHeaderIcon BAGA Announces 2012 Asian American Community Leadership Award Recipient: Mr. Channy Soeur

Bangladesh Association of Greater Austin (BAGA) is proud to announce Channy Soeur as the recipient of this year's Asian American Community Leadership Award for his contribution to BAGA and other Asian American communities in Austin.

Mr. Channy Soeur was named the Network of Asian American Organizations seventh president on July 28, 2010. Channy is the owner of CAS Consulting & Services, a dynamic engineering firm specializing in civil, environmental and transportation engineering. In the past 11 years, CAS Consulting has grown from a 3 person business to a 20+ firm with offices in Austin, Dallas and San Antonio. Under his leadership NAAO, City of Austin and Asian American Resource Center jointly broke the ground for the future iconic building for AARC in Austin.

Prior to starting his own firm, Channy worked for the City of Austin for 16 years in various capacities including engineer, division manager, and assistant director for four different departments: Planning Department, Environmental Conservation & Services Department, Solid Waste Services Department, and Park & Recreation Department.

Bangladesh Association of Greater Austin (BAGA) is proud to announce City of Austin, Parks and Recreation Department as the recipient of this year's Community Collaboration Award for it's consistent contribution to BAGA events and to make Austin one of the best and most livable city in North America.

Austin, the capital of Texas, is one of the country's most popular cities. It is the 16th largest cities in the U.S, the fourth largest cities in Texas, and is surrounded by the natural beauty of Hill Country. It is a welcoming and friendly city of approximately 700,000 with plenty to offer.

City of Austin's vision for Austin to be most livable city in the country for the foreseeable future. Recent National Geographic dubbed Austin the "Best Little City in America". The city can be proud of many qualities that make it one of the best.
